Jodi Parker is the Health Education Specialist, Title IV, Part A State Coordinator, and strategy leader for Safe and Healthy Schools section of the strategic plan for the Utah State Board of Education. In addition, she supports several local community coalitions and advisory committees on Health Education policy and needs.
Jodi has a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Sport Science with a Spanish minor from the University of Utah and a master’s degree in Secondary Education from the University of Phoenix. Jodi previously taught and coached for ten years in Northern Utah. She is an advocate for all education, but especially health education for the whole child. Jodi believes that there is nothing more important than teaching a student the skills and behaviors for them to lead a healthy lifestyle: physically, mentally, and socially.
Susanne Schmal

Susanne Schmal is a public health practitioner with 20+ years in chronic disease prevention, wellness, and school health. She is currently the School Health Partnerships & Policy Consultant in the NC Department of Public Instruction (DPI). She works with school districts in NC, community partners, as well as state and national partners to support their policy and practice efforts to build on successes addressing components of the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child model. Prior to working in the DPI, Susanne worked at the NC Division of Public Health, UNC-Chapel Hill, the Division of Community Health at Duke University Medical Center, and Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She received her MPH at UNC-Chapel Hill in the Health Behavior program. Susanne is a generalist at heart and loves the connections among the various sectors and people, but appreciates the specialized expertise needed, as well, and enjoys bringing these worlds together for creative solutions.

![]() Lennie Parham Lennie Parham is in his sixth year as the Comprehensive Health and Physical Education Coordinator, Office of Standards, Division of Teaching and Learning Services at the New Jersey Department of Education. Lennie is currently the Chair of the Advocacy Committee and a member of SHAPE America’s Health Committee. He received his Ed.D. at Drexel University in Educational Leadership and Management with a concentration in Creativity and Innovation. A Gonzaga University and East Stroudsburg University Alum. Lennie spent over fifteen years as an Athletic Director, Health and Physical Education Supervisor, Teacher, and Head Basketball Coach in New Jersey’s public schools. An advocate for educating the whole child through health and physical education for all students with a passion to nurture and walk along leaders in education to create equitable core content schedules and learning environments for healthier learners and gracious K-12 administrators. In addition, a strong focus on diversifying the HPE teaching and coaching workforce. A former college basketball coach with over 10 years of Division I experience. |
Carolyn Gross is the Physical Education and Health Education Specialist for the Maine Department of Education. She is responsible for assisting Maine school districts with the implementation of the health and physical education state standards, providing professional learning opportunities for health and physical education teachers around the state, facilitating the Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey/School Health Profiles in conjunction with the Maine CDC, collaborating with agencies and organizations with a focus on health, physical activity and wellness, along with the promotion of initiatives that impact overall health. |
